Beginner Tips for Essential Oils

Series of 3 - Beginner Tips
When you sign up as a member with Young Living to get great products, you are also in for a learning curve!! Not only do you have a lot of new products at our hands, you will want to know what to do with them, what not to do and what they can be used for. In any case it's a fascinating thing to see how an organically grown plant can change and improve health from seed to seal, as they say.

That's why I have a page on my website for resources where you can look things up and do a little research about oils and supplements. There is so much out there. Of course the best place to go FIRST would be your Essential Oils Desk Reference Pocket Guide or the Essential Oils Desk Reference Book. Links to these books for your research and questions are also listed on the resource page.

I was reading from other members' comments and developed a series of beginner tips. These are mainly practical tips about essential oils, very useful and some creative! I think you will love your oils!

Happy Oiling from Pickle Creek Ranch!!

The Essential Oil Bottle

Picture
Have you ever examined your bottles? Here are a few things you might want to know!
Picture
THE FRONT: Note this is a therapeutic grade essential oil meaning it is of the highest quality.
  • A single oil is from one plant and a blend of oils  is from multiple plants.
  • The 15ml bottle will have 250-300 drops depending on the type of oil.
  • The 5ml bottle will have 80-100 drops.

Picture
THE BACK: See the directions on the back of the bottle. Most oils are used three ways: aromatically, topically or internally.
  • Not every oil is intended to use internally, so be sure and check your label.
  • There is a batch number above the directions for reference.
  • Oils are stored in dark bottles to keep their shelf life indefinitely, so keep your oils in a cool, dark place to assure this.

Picture
When you look at the back of the bottle note where it says “Peel Here”. When you peel back the label there is additional information:

   a. Supplement facts with serving info in a white boxed format to be intended for internal use or

    b. Ingredients with no serving info. This oil may be used topically or aromatically. It is not intended for internal use.

Picture
There are different oil thicknesses and sometimes oil comes out fast or slow. See the tiny hole next to the center in the crease? It has a purpose!

With the tiny hole pointed up, oil drops slower. With it down, oil drops faster.

I hope this article was helpful to you!
Happy Oiling!

Sage Essential Oil

The pure therapeutic grade Sage Essential Oil I'm referring to, comes from the plant Salvia officinalis.

As a noun, the meaning of the word "sage" indicates a person of wisdom. In some countries sage is used to cleanse and purify homes from negative influences.

According to Wikipedia, this is the interesting history of Sage, the plant: "S. officinalis has been used since ancient times for warding off evil, snakebites, increasing women's fertility, and more. Theophrastus wrote about two different sages, a wild undershrub he called sphakos, and a similar cultivated plant he called elelisphakos. Pliny the Elder said the latter plant was called salvia by the Romans, and used as a diuretic, a local anesthetic for the skin, a styptic, and for other uses. Charlemagne recommended the plant for cultivation in the early Middle Ages, and during the Carolingian Empire, it was cultivated in monastery gardens. Walafrid Strabo described it in his poem Hortulus as having a sweet scent and being useful for many human ailments—he went back to the Greek root for the name and called it lelifagus."

Reported to be good for emotional balance as well as mental fatigue, Young Living Sage Essential Oil may help in coping with despair. Helps to alleviate occasional nervous irritability. Diffuse in your work space to cleanse negative energies!

This oil can be applied topically, or diffused. Sage Vitality essential oil can also be used in cooking.

Ear Support and Essential Oils

11/15/2014

Picture
There may come a time, even in winter, that issues arise with the ear in conjunction with swimming or even bathing. The first thing to know is DO NOT put essential oils in the ear. Safety first!

Here are a few safe ways to use essential oils if discomfort occurs.

Try one of the three:
Melrose, Thieves or Purification Essential Oils by Young Living.
  • Diffuse for 1/2 hour, every 4-6 hours or as desired.
  • Apply a drop of Thieves behind the ear.
  • Apply 2 drops of oil, diluted 50/50, in warm olive oil to a cotton swab. Using the swab, apply traces to the skin AROUND the opening of the ear, but not in it.
  • Put 2-3 drops of the diluted essential oil on a piece of cotton and place it carefully over the ear opening. Leave in overnight.

Crape Myrtle Surprise

11/14/2014

Picture
Do you like color in your landscape? Crape myrtles (Lagerstroemia) are some of the easiest to grow and they make such a pretty show in the summer with their blooms and in the autumn when the leaves have a chance to change from green to red and yellow and bronze.

We have this huge 20 plus foot tall crape myrtle in our back yard in the city. After much tree trimming we had a stack of branches laying there ready to break down and move out of the yard.

I started planting peppers in the spring and I when realized the crape myrtle branches were so nice and straight, I cut sections to stake my pepper plants. Hey why pay for plant stakes when you have them in your own back yard?

I had three almost perfectly straight sticks that I placed next to my plants to secure their future growth. I wasn't thinking and if I had even thought about it, I would have paid attention to what DIRECTION I put the stakes in!! One day I was watering my peppers and I saw leaves coming out of the top of one of my stakes! OMG! The stake I had set in, with the natural growth direction UP, was growing a new plant!

Now I know this is not rocket science, but what a nice surprise to have a new plant starting that I can replant somewhere else. This one is going to the country house!

So next time you go to cutting on your crape myrtles, maybe ask yourself if you want another one and which side is up when you put it in the ground!

Quick Cat Shelter

Tiger talks - a lot! If you are a cat person, you will understand that he is talking about how much he likes his cat shelter in the winter time. :)
For the quick cat shelter.

Do you have a special cat at your home? How about a newly adopted animal that needs some additional shelter from the breezy cold air?

Whether your cat is inside or out there comes a time, in Texas, (yes, even in Texas) when it gets chilly and they like to curl up in a little ball.
So... We picked up groceries and a nice heavy box for the cat.

• Roll towels, small rugs or bath mats to make a circle then lay a bath mat on top.
•
Cut the box so it is open when you set it upside down on top of bath mats.
• Make it even cozier for them by adding a bath mat across the top of the  box.
• Set it in a sunny location if possible.
• If it needs to be anchored down put something on top of it like a brick or an empty terra cotta pot.

As long as it doesn't get wet, it is sturdy enough with a little weight on it. Tiger even sleeps on top of it when the temps start to turn warmer again or if it is a sunny day.

We don't need this all year long so it makes for a good seasonal item in our sun room where Tiger likes to hang out and sleep in the winter months. You could fancy it up with your own bath mats or towels with a color scheme but this works fine for us.
